The Best Meteor Shower of the Year – and Telescopic Planets Too!

Sci Tech invites the public to a free telescopic astronomy event on Saturday, December 13 at 7:00pm.

Featured at this observing session will be the planet Saturn with its rings, and later in the evening, Jupiter with its moons.

December 13 is also the peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower, the most prolific meteor shower of the year. Geminid meteors are often bright and are notable for a variety of colors. Unlike most other annual meteor showers which are caused by comets, the Geminids are the result of debris left in the wake of an asteroid known as 3200 Phaethon.

Sci-Tech staff will be on hand to help viewers observe telescopic images, point out other interesting celestial phenomena, and guide viewers around the sky.

This event will be held in Watertown’s Thompson Park, on West Tower Drive, across from the 10th Mountain Division Monument.

Observers should plan to dress warmly (hats and gloves).

In the event of overcast skies, the astronomy night will be canceled.
